Zoom Course “Illustrations for Andersen’s fairy tales” (from 8 y.o.) (July – Sept 2026)

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course will introduce the fairy tales of the great Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.

For Russian-speaking children growing up in Australia, these aren’t just drawing lessons; they’re an opportunity to connect with works that have shaped generations. Many of Andersen’s fairy tales are well known to parents, but they aren’t part of the compulsory school curriculum in Australia, so children rarely have the opportunity to discover them.
Perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to immerse your child in a comprehensive understanding of Andersen’s work in a short period of time.

In this course, we’ll explore Andersen’s most famous fairy tales (parents will receive a selection of materials and links for exploring the works at home), learn about book illustration, and see how differently different artists depict the same characters.

Inspired by the works of famous illustrators, children will create their own illustrations for Andersen’s most beloved fairy tales. Each work will be created using a new technique and various art materials, so the children will not only develop their creative thinking and artistic skills but also learn to find their own style.

We will create seven illustrations for fairy tales:
“The Snow Queen,”
“The Steadfast Tin Soldier,”
“The Wild Swans,”
“The Princess and the Pea,”
“The Little Mermaid,”
“The Ugly Duckling,” and
“Thumbelina.”

The course will be conducted interactively via Zoom video conferencing. It includes nine lessons, held weekly from July 29 to September 24, 2026.

Please, note these lessons will be conducted in Russian.

Price:

$252 for a course of 9 lessons ($28 per lesson), or $33 per lesson if you join occasionally.

Attention!
Due to the holidays in different states start at different times, I take average dates of the beginning and end of the course. If any of the lessons of the course fall on your school holidays, and you will not be able to attend for this reason, then I will provide an opportunity to do the lesson using a recording of the session.

FOR WHOM THIS COURSE

The course is ideal for children, teenagers, and even adults with children—for anyone interested in trying their hand at fairy tale illustrator.

Since the format is family-friendly, other family members can participate for free, with no feedback required. This means the course is open to all artists in your family over this age, with no age limit.
This course is for anyone who wants to create for the soul!

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Children will become acquainted with the timeless works of a classic of world literature, Hans Christian Andersen. His fairy tales explore themes of kindness, compassion, loneliness, courage, and self-sacrifice—values traditionally considered important in the literature of our childhoods. If you want to introduce your children to Andersen’s work, the best way to do so is through visual means, including through a visual component. We will read, listen to, and watch Andersen’s fairy tales throughout the course, as well as for homework (I will provide parents with all the links to these resources in a private Telegram chat).
During the lessons themselves, we will explore fairy tale illustrations created by various artists from around the world. Visual experience broadens horizons and allows us to think more broadly when creating our own works of art.
We will also create our own fairy tale illustrations using a variety of techniques and materials.
The course is planned to be very intensive!

MATERIALS FOR THIS COURSE

– 5 thick white A3 sheets (watercolor paper is ideal)
– 2 thick white A4 sheets
– A thick, flat black permanent marker, about 5 mm wide (chisel permanent marker) – an essential resource for this course. It will give us a striking line. Alternatively, you can use black ink and a thin round brush.
– 1 mm black permanent marker
– thin black liner
– white paint marker (marker with white paint inside)
– watercolor paints
– soft round brushes of various sizes, including a very thin one
– colored pencils
– colored oil pastels
– water in a jar
– lead HB pencil
– eraser
– a hair dryer is useful for painting lessons (to quickly dry the work)
